A grand and complex memorial was built to place Albert in the centre of arts and sciences of the 1860s. PRINCE ALBERT Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was born in southwest Germany in an area now known as Bavaria in 1819, the same year as his wife, and cousin, Queen Victoria who he married in 1840.

The memorial was commissioned by Queen Victoria as a tribute to her late consort. The monument, standing 175 feet/53 meters tall, was built from 1864 to 1876 after a Neo-Gothic design by Sir George Gilbert Scott. A 14-feet-tall (4 meters) gilded statue shows Albert seated under a pinnacle, holding a catalogue of the 1851 Great Exhibition.
